Dog-friendly Portland

It worries me that the difference between ‘comfortable’ and poor should be so wide. Rich and poor have always existed but in Portland it was obvious that lack of jobs, poor housing, poor nutrition and God knows what prospects have created a grey wasteland of urban decay. The whizzo sailing centre, which will be gleaming come 2012, is another world. The rich past of quarrying and beautiful scenery remain, as does a pride and indomitability in the people I met. They were all friendly, trusting, confiding and dog-loving. Suits me. They recognized me in the Co-Op after two days. I chatted to passers by on the street without being considered a mad woman. They deserve so much more. Anyway, the dogs and I loved it and Richard and David had a great time racing in the Wayfarer Worlds. The photos show some favourite places and new pals.

Sounds like a great week – hope the wind was kinder to your two than it was to me!
Not bad for sailing and fine for the dogs and me – but I thought of you as it was flukey, too. Had no internet at the cottage.
